IHI Marine Co., Ltd. (IMC) was set up in 1975 as a wholly owned subsidiary of Ishikawajima-Harima Heavy Industries Co., Ltd. (IHI) to apply the skills and experience acquired by IHI to the field of ship maintenance. Subsequently IHI created another subsidiary, IHI Marine International Inc., to exploit their shipbuilding expertise as a marketable commodity. By 1998, these two companies, while continuing to draw on IHI's resources of skills and manpower, had achieved commercial maturity and a measure of independence and, in order to provide their clients with a wider spectrum of services and enhanced facilities, they were merged with effect from January 1999 under the style of IMC.
